Bucephalus 11:34
A sword of light severs the darkness in the east, Cuts the throat of night where the earth and heavens meet. The blood of dawn pours bright upon the trembling shields. Rise, you dogs of war, a hundred thousand, man and beast. You detonated, once more into the breach, Chest inflated, lips curled back from the teeth. What flesh more naked, eyes rolling back in fear, When blades and arrows seek your end? Subjugated, what horrors have you seen? In bloodshed mated; what sorrows and defeats? So it has been immemorial. Bucephalus, you were a martyr to your breed, A legend sung from Macedon to Hydaspes. An ageless song, you dead two thousand years and more, Though your frame be gone, yet your name it is immortal.

Talon 09:36
The desert spans the earth, encompassing all I survey; A hunger drives me soaring through the barren jaundiced sky. No rain to quench my thirst, the rivers now so far and few; No thunder but the storm of fire and emptiness inside. (I walk on the bed of an ocean) There’s no escape (I fly in the mouth of a dead wind) This bitter fate here, (I sleep, in the dream forsaken) But I’m never letting go of this talon hold. (I fall when the sun starts rising) And I might fade, (I rise when the stars stop falling) My body waste away, (I cling to the edge of the yawning) But I’m never letting go of this talon hold. I flew too close to the sun; I tried to touch the horizon, It was always just a step away my efforts were in vain. And now those wretched ones have gone, consumed by their own vanity. Those reckless days have been and gone and never shall return.

Cerberus 09:57
The crash of falling trees concussive as the axe bites deep in the forest’s flesh Flattened into fields to fatten the grazing breeds bred only for their flesh Never eat and defecate in the same hole Never turn your back on a cornered animal Never send to know for whom that bell tolls It tolls for thee Behold the vengeance of the earth Come forth to right the oppressor’s wrongs Beware the reckoning of Cerberus And know you shall feel his wrath The air is rank with smoke, the rivers red in blood and oil and pesticide Cities like canker growths, weapons that crack the earth and suffocate the sky Soon the tide will turn and you will rue this time Soon the sky will burn and you will rue this time Soon the earth will speak and you will rue this time The sown shall be reaped and you will rue this time
4.
Howl 09:17
I dwell in darkness; I haunt the spaces in between. Maybe you can hear my breath in that urgent moment as you fall asleep. I felt a sickness, as I watched from the ancient forest deep, All your faces lit from beneath yet you don’t seem to see a thing. What light so hypnotic that you’ve forgotten another world around you? What dread narcotic has you so confused? I’m not a prophet but I promise you’ll destroy yourselves and soon. You won’t spin a profit off this one. I walk in the shadows; I touch where the sound and the silence meet. I can taste a sorrow deep when I bend my mouth to the river’s teat. And I see to your marrow; I’ve seen what your worst desires wreak. Your poison soaks the earth, no field so bare but that your cities encroach.
5.
Fawn 10:59
When I wake at night I listen for your breath I wrap you from the cold against my breast I search the dark for peril while you rest I strain my eyes into the forest depths Sleep my love I’ll wake you when it’s dawn The nights are cold but the days are getting long And with perils new the world of light is fraught But I’ll be with you there Stay near, don’t stray too far That I might keep you free from harm Heed well, what I taught you And it might guide you through the storm It might guide you when I’m gone The season of the hunter now has come So listen for the belching of their guns And keep your nose bent to the forest’s breath Hone your senses firmly to their stench They move like ghosts in the pale light of the dawn They won’t come close their weapons reach so far No compassion or remorse will move their hearts For they have none Stay near, don’t stray too far That I might keep you free from harm Heed well, what I taught you And it might guide you through the storm It might guide you when they come But these days of dread won’t last forever So don’t surrender your heart to despair There’s beauty in this world beyond all measure And when the guns are gone this beauty will prevail And I will show you I will show you

about

The multi-instrumentalist progressive metal and alternative rock artist The Animal State brings you his debut album 'Genus'. A conceptual  offering, each song is packed with compelling riffs and propelled forward through a melodic progression which never pauses for rest but builds and evolves to an often climactic end.  The lyrics are provocative and fit into the larger concept of the album, which deals with mankind’s precarious relationship with the natural world.
